Rattan furniture: artisanal and authentic work
Rattan, whether used in the form of rattan cane, woven rattan or rattan cane, is a natural, durable and aesthetic material. At Théo-Bébé, we are committed to offering you furniture that combines artisanal tradition and contemporary design.
What is rattan?
Rattan is a wild plant that belongs to the palm family, native to Southeast Asia. It grows as a full vine. It is known for its strength, flexibility and lightness, making it an ideal material for making furniture. It is so flexible that it is possible, by working with it, to obtain very varied shapes, sometimes even very complex. Rattan can be used in different ways: rattan cane, woven rattan or even rattan cane, offering a multitude of options for making furniture.
Rattan cane
Rattan cane is the raw stem of rattan, often used to make furniture frames. It is particularly robust and durable, capable of supporting significant loads without deforming. At Théo-Bébé, we often use rattan cane for the legs of our furniture for example (link to one of the beds with rattan cane legs), guaranteeing stability and safety for your children, and bringing an original and natural touch to your
furniture.
Woven rattan
Woven rattan is a technique where rattan fibers are intertwined (“braided”) to create unique patterns and textures. This method allows us to design furniture that is both robust and very aesthetic.Théo-Bébé integrates woven rattan into numerous designs to bring a touch of natural elegance to our furniture, as in the panels present on the drawers of our dressers by example (put link to one of the dressers)
Rattan canework
Rattan caning is an artisanal technique which consists of braiding rattan fibers to form regular, openwork patterns. At Théo-Bébé, we use rattan canework to add added value and a natural touch to our furniture.
Rattan crafts
Rattan work is an ancestral art that requires great skill and meticulous attention to detail. In Indonesia, where the majority of the rattan used by Théo-Bébé comes from and where our factory is located, artisans perpetuate techniques passed down from generation to generation. These expert artisans cut, process, weave and cane the rattan by hand, ensuring that each piece is unique and of the highest quality.
Stages of manufacturing rattan furniture in our factory in Indonesia
- Harvesting and Drying: the process begins with harvesting the rattan from the forests. The rattan stems are then dried to reduce their moisture content, making them stronger and more durable.
- Preparation: the rattan stems are then cleaned and cut to the desired size.
- Braiding and Caning: rattan fibers are braided or caned by hand to create the desired patterns and textures. This work requires great precision and artisanal know-how.
- Assembly: the different pieces of rattan are then assembled on the furniture. This may include attaching frames, adding supports and finishing details.
- Finish: the furniture is varnished (with a solvent-free water-based varnish) to give it a polished appearance and protect the rattan against the elements.
Why does Théo-Bébé use rattan?
At Théo-Bébé, we firmly believe in the importance of choosing quality and natural materials for our furniture.
Rattan is extremely durable and is therefore a major asset for the manufacture of baby furniture. Our rattan furniture can stand the test of time and daily use by children. Their robustness ensures that they remain in good condition, even after years of use.
Rattan also brings natural beauty and an artisanal touch to our furniture. Each rattan piece is unique, with variations in color and texture that enrich the overall aesthetic and make your piece of furniture unique.
Rattan furniture is light and easy to move, which is particularly practical in children's rooms. We also have a baby bed made entirely of natural rattan, which is very easily transportable (insert link to the NEMO bed page).
Finally, rattan is a renewable resource. It grows quickly and can be harvested sustainably without harming the surrounding ecosystem. Rattan grows 7 times faster than a tree, and allows local populations to inhabit the tropical forests where it grows, thus promoting the preservation of the ecosystem. It is a great alternative to the intensive exploitation of these forests. At Théo-Bébé, we are committed to using responsibly sourced rattan, thereby contributing to the preservation of the environment and we also support Indonesian artisans who continue centuries-old traditions. Each rattan piece of furniture we produce is the result of artisanal know-how, ensuring unrivaled quality and attention to detail.
