Wood veneer versus heat seal wood grain plastic laminates
What is wood veneer?
Wood veneer is a thin layer of real wood applied to a support (on mdf for example, as we do at Théo-Bébé). This process allows us to combine the beauty and texture of solid wood with the structural advantages of mdf panels, such as stability and resistance to deformations.
The advantages of wood veneer
- Natural aesthetics: wood veneer retains all the visual characteristics of solid wood, including unique grain patterns and color variations. Each wooden veneer furniture is therefore unique and brings a warm and authentic touch to any child's room. To the touch, the difference is also palpable, the real wood bringing a different sensation.
- Sustainability: although finer than solid wood, wood veneer is extremely durable. When properly applied, it resists daily wear and tear and minor impacts, which is essential in a child's room. Paste wooden sheets on mdf panels also helps prevent the furniture to crack.
- Respect for the environment: using wood veneer on natural mdf makes it possible to maximize the use of solid wood in a sustainable manner. The natural mdf is made from recycled wood fibers, which reduces waste and minimizes the environmental impact.
- Non-toxicity: quality wood veneers, such as those used by Théo-Bébé, do not contain non- toxic products, guaranteeing a safe environment for children.
What is heat seal wood grain plastic laminates
Heat seal wood grain plastic laminates is a synthetic material imitating wood. It consists of a layer of plastic film printed with a wood grain pattern, which is then glued to a composite panel support like the mdf using heat and pressure. Although this material may seem similar to real wood at first glance, it has several notable drawbacks.
- Artificial appearance: although wood imitations have made progress, they can never completely reproduce the unique appearance and the texture of real wood. The plastic laminate lacks depth and variation, which gives a more artificial and less aesthetically beautiful appearance.
- Lower sustainability: plastic laminates are much more likely to tear itself off, scratch and wear out than wooden veneer.
- Environmental impact: The production of plastic laminates necessarily involves the use of plastics and chemicals, which can have a negative environmental impact. In addition, these materials are not biodegradable and contribute to plastic waste.
- VOC emissions: adhesives and finishes used in plastic laminates can issue volatile organic compounds (VOC) which can be harmful to health, especially in a child's room.
At Théo-Bébé, we have chosen to use wood veneer with thin sheets of solid wood on natural mdf. Indeed, we are committed to creating and offering you quality furniture, a mission which is at the heart of everything we do. By using wood veneer, we can offer furniture that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also sturdy and durable. Each piece is designed to resist and accompany you for many years in your daily life, while retaining its natural beauty.
The safety of your children is also our priority. The wood veneer used by Théo-Bébé is finished with non-toxic products, guaranteeing a healthy and safe indoor environment. Unlike plastic laminates, our materials do not release harmful substances into the air, providing peace of
mind for parents.
As a furniture manufacturer, we are also aware of our responsibility towards the environment. By using natural mdf and wood veneers, we minimize our ecological footprint. The wood used comes from sustainable sources and ecologically managed forests, and the natural mdf is made from recycled wood fibers, contributing to a more responsible use of resources.
